Comparing the poems ‘neutral tones’ and ‘when we two parted’ representing the end of a relationship.

In the poem when we two parted by Lord Byron it shows the brake by emotions staged such as sadness, shame, anger and finally regret and betrayal where as in Neutral tones by Thomas hardy it is more of a story of how the relationship ended in the way he gives us details of the setting and how he saw the woman of whom which a relationship ended. But they do share a similarity they both use a regular rhyme scheme and both have four regular stanzas. The language in the way it is written is very different in when we two parted a older English is spoke for example “colder thy kiss” when compared to a line from neutral tones “the smile on ur mouth was the deadest thing alive enough to have strength to die” are completely different in effect as the older English spoke in when we two part sounds more like a live poem where as in neutral tones it’s more of a sad but true effect to the poem. Both poems present the end of a relationship in a melancholy series of events that lead to the same feelings such as sorrow and regret although one was about an affair they both represent the end of a relationship as a emotional process.

  1. Ajay,

Your writing contains some sophisticated ideas in response to the poems.
I particularly like your idea that both poems “present the end of a relationship in a melancholy series of events”.

Try to think beyond whether the language is “older” and focus on particular words and phrases from both poems in how they reflect the themes and help you as a reader to arrive at your interpretation. (Also, remember to use capital letters for the poem titles, e.g. When We Two Parted).
