This poem has 5 stanzas but, the final stanza splits. At the final line to give the effect of emphasis of separation which is the theme of the poem as he is talking about how he is separated from his dead parents. The poet uses so much detail about his parents and the picnic as he is remembering them in there times of happiness together and this might have been at picnics like the one described. I think Causely had a good relationship with his parents as he uses no negative language when talking about them in this poem. The stream has a great significance as it seems to present the river Styx in If which he feels separated from his parents as the have already crossed the stream or river Styx into the after life. I think that the poet is imiganing his parents in the after life as he says ‘I had not thought it would be like this’ which means to me that he never thought he would feel how he feels now he’s actually thinkin about his parents. I would compare this poem to the poem ‘when we two parted’ as they share a theme of separation and sadness.
